What Is An Off-Air Antenna

An off-air antenna is a product people use to receive over-the-air signals from broadcast TV stations. In order to use an antenna, your television must have a built-in tuner or you must have an external tuner connected to the antenna and television. If your television does not have a built in tuner you can purchase one for less than $100. They are very easy to install and you can get a free guide to help you install your tuner by signing up for our email program below. Most of newer HDTV’s should have a built in ATSC tuner . This is different from the older traditional NTSC TVs. An ATSC tuner allows you to receive UHF broadcasts once connected to a good quality antenna and receive digital Over The Air HDTV. HD quality better then any satellite provider or cable provider. Over The Air HDTV is better then any other form of broadcast currently as it has little to no compression. If your TV is an older TV, without an ATSC tuner and even a regular non HD tv, then you cannot receive UHF broadcasts in digital and will only get any VHF broadcasts over the air , which means you will get a snowy picture. However if you connect your antenna to a digital converter box, then connect your converter box to your TV. You will receive these UHF broadcasts in Digital crystal clear picture, better then cable or satellite, but not in High Definition as your TV is not a High Definition TV

There are some schools of thought that suggest that since it is an antenna. That you can use your existing antenna to pick up all these digital broadcasts.

As a result, I suggest that you try using your old antenna before buying a new antenna marketed toward HD reception. If your current antenna doesn’t work then you might need one with amplification, which helps the antenna pick up a better signal. You can purchase a new HDTV Antenna at a number of places. You should be able to get a half decent one for under $100

Amplified Antennas

Amplified antennas electrically increase the ability to receive a weak signal. These antennas are especially good for people living in rural areas because the incoming signal might need a boost.

Indoor v. Outdoor Antennas

One could argue that a $20 indoor antenna works just as well as a $100 roof-mount model. It all depends on where a person lives in conjunction with the strength of signal coming from the TV towers.

Good antenna selection is not just based on distance from the transmitting station. It’s also based on accurately characterizing signal conditions and selecting an antenna that works in that situation.

How Many Channels will I Get

I have two antennas running right now. One is an indoor one that I purchased for $30 and it is sitting in my window ledge and I pick up 9 channels. I have another roof mount antenna that I purchased for $65 and it picks up 33 channels. The best thing about these antennas over my HD cable box is that they broadcast in 1080p. The Picture off of these is pretty amazing. The amount of channels you pick up will depend on different factors such as the type of Antenna and where you live.
